The Crop

We make Vibers from a crop called elephant grass (Miscanthus Giganteus in Latin), using the whole crop, and without using chemical processing. Thanks to new technology, we use Vibers to create materials with a high technical performance, and with a low ecological footprint. Our technology is scalable, usable for other companies all over the world. As we like to say: “we put Vibers inside!”

  • Grows on marginal land, not fit for food production
  • In the Netherlands it absorbs about 30 tons of CO2 per hectare per year (four times more than a European forest)
  • Non food crop, once plated we can harvest each spring for 20 years
  • Low moisture, from the land immediately ready for processing
  • Suitable for use in many sustainable materials, including bioplastic, bio-concrete and paper
  • No fertilizers needed
What does elephant grass contain?

Elephant grass is a biomass of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Cellulose is the main ingredient for most biomaterials, while hemicellulose is the matrix consisting of various polysaccharides. Lignin provides the biomass with structure and rigidity.

Greenhouse Gas sink during cultivation

Elephant Grass has greater potential to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHC) emissions during cultivation than crops like switchgrass and corn, according to researchers.


In Europe this typically occurs in early spring. The spring harvest enables the plant to recycle nutrients from falling leaves and leaching. In other words, where elephant grass is grown, there is less nutrient and mineral depletion of the soil.

Low Moisture

These days, plants using little, or almost no water are very beneficial. Elephant grass moisture content ranges from 15-20% for late winter harvests.

The result

We could have focused on the use of elephant grass as animal feed. Or as a bio-energy crop. Or as a starting material to produce cellulose and other chemicals. We could have, but we didn’t. We had a more ambitious plan. We aimed higher in the value chain, developing high tech fibres. These fibres can be used to make bio-polymers, bio-concrete, papers and cardboard. At the same time, we are constantly researching and updating the technology and materials we use.
